Take a look at this Cars trailer encoded in H.264. The picture is mind-boggling.

There is a help page on the site to instruct you how to play the movie. You can't just play it on your existing movie player on the PC (like Windows Media Player). You need a video filter like the FFDShow.
But beware, playing a H.264 encoded video will be a CPU hog. Even on my Intel Pentium 2.4GHz PC, the playback is not entirely smooth.
There are others competing HD compression format like HD Divx and HD WMV. Each one of them has its own pros and cons. But my personal preference is still H.264. Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies are encoded in H.264.
You can find a few more trailers on the above website encoded in H.264 as well as HD Divx. To see video clips encoded in HD WMV, proceed to this Microsoft website.
Enjoy!
